Summer 2010

  • The National Mathematics Summer School
    2010

Feedback from a previous attendee, Paul Oliver (winner of the Larry Blakers Award) - "The National Maths Summer School is truly an experience I greatly enjoyed and would very much recommend to anyone considering applying.

I would say the best part of the summer school was meeting and making friends with the other students at the school. The great thing about the people attending the school is they all have similar interests and motivations, which makes it easy to connect with people around you. Also, throughout the school, there are large amounts of free time, allowing you to explore the city or simply hang around the college.

As for the maths at the school, the course material is really fascinating and challenging as it is taken from university courses (such as Number Theory from a 3rd year course, you learn for example how 4x4 can =1, which surprisingly has applications in coding). The great thing about the maths you do at the school is they explain how it is used in ‘real life’. The summer school also includes lectures from past NMSS students, about how they have used maths in their careers – including explanations of all the maths they are using.

Attending this course really opens your eyes to how significant maths is in every part of our lives. It shows how interesting and complex the application of maths is in science and technology and how far maths has been developed.

I would definitely recommend applying for this summer school. It is a great opportunity!"
