Aims of the Math Talent Quest competition

Mathematics Talent Quest (‘MTQ’) aims to involve students of all ability levels in a co-operative and enjoyable mathematical investigation.

Why enter?

IIt allows students to explore Mathematics on a class, an individual or a small group basis. It is a great opportunity for winning certifi cates, prizes and awards and the experience also helps with general projects, investigations and literacy. If the 1st prizewinner from Year 11/12 is in the Individual Student category, he or she will be awarded the Cletus Oakley Medal by MAWA and a Scholarship to the value of $1000 to enter the double degree BA(Ed)/BSc program in Mathematics at Edith Cowan University in either 2010 or 2011 kindly sponsored by Edith Cowan University.

Who can enter?

• Whole classes: K-7
• Individuals (Yrs 4-12) or groups of 2 to 3 students (Yrs 4-12)

How to present the findings of your mathematical investigation

A mathematical investigation is an activity where mathematics is applied to systematically explore certain ideas. This could involve, for example, collecting and analysing data, finding and generalising number patterns, formulating and testing conjectures, and modelling and measuring attributes. The findings of the investigation can be presented as a report, a poster, a calculator/computer program, a story or an audio visual presentation.

What happens?

• Teachers may decide to make the MTQ projects an investigative part of their course work
• Students may begin their projects any time - at the latest by the start of Term 2.
• Late in Term 2, projects are collected and judged by the school.
• Selected projects are entered by the school in the State level competition.
• Selected winners from the State judging go forward to the National Mathematics Talent Quest.

General details

• An information pack containing general information, judging criteria, and entry rules together with topic details will be sent after registration.
• After the school judging (late June), the school will nominate and pay for each State entry.
• Merit certificates are provided for all State entries.
• State judging - Thursday 30 to Saturday 1 August 2009.
• Awards Night for prize winners and participants August 7th 2009.

Registration details

• Schools pay a registration fee for entry to the competition.
• On receipt of completed registration form and fee, the information pack and topic details will be sent.
• Registration forms are due in the MAWA office by Friday 13 March 2009.
