    Keynote Speaker

Mike Camden works for Statistics New Zealand and has a passionate interest in how young people engage in and learn about chance and data. He believes that chance and data is a critical subject for children of all ages and particularly for making sense of things in an information-rich society of the future. A brief excerpt of his abstract is provided below.

School statistics for a challenging century
Chance and Data forms a very strong subset of West Australia’s Mathematics Courses. For this subset and the rest of the courses, ‘people who are mathematically able can contribute greatly towards dealing with many diffi cult issues facing the world today, such as health, sustainability, climate and justice’. However, the Chance and Data subset has some differences from the rest: It enables people to contribute in different ways, it is learnt in different ways, and we need to deliver it in different ways. The community needs to value it in different ways.
