Invitation to Present
MAWA State Conference
18-20 August 2006 - Bunbury

More than ever before, teachers are busy people. We have many responsibilities and limited time. In order to do our job well we have to be resourceful, and we have to make good use of the resources available to us.

This year promises to be a tumultuous time for mathematics teachers: outcomes, new courses of study, new textbooks, new calculators, – and students as demanding, as interesting, and as excited by mathematics as ever.

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia residential State Conference will be based at Edith Cowan University and the Lord Forrest Hotel, Bunbury, on 18 to 20 August 2006.

We have decided that the State Conference theme has to be Resources and Resourcefulness. Yes, we want to equip mathematics teachers as best we can with new ideas and new things, but we also want to celebrate the creativity and resilience of our fellow educators. We hope this theme resonates with you and that you will attend the Conference, and perhaps become a Conference presenter and share your insights and ideas about good teaching practice.

We need to cater for teachers who are faced with new challenges; teachers from other countries; teachers returning to the workforce; and beginning teachers faced with a wide variety of resource and support situations.

Often the response to changes in curriculum, assessment and reporting is introduced across a whole mathematics department, therefore whole-department presentations are warmly welcomed.

Presentations can be 30 minutes or 60 minutes in length.

All of us must get the message out that mathematics teaching remains a vibrant and worthwhile career. In particular, we need to reinforce that there are excellent resources available to teachers, that teacher creativity is what makes the career so satisfying, and that collegial support is available.

Yours sincerely
Dr. Paul Brown
