2009 Newsletter No. 1

Hi everyone and welcome back. I hope you all had an enjoyable and refreshing break and are ready to face the coming year.

MAWA has been working hard to increase its activity in a number of areas over the last year and so you should see an increasing presence from us in terms of the support we provide for you, our members. A lot of new resources for both teachers and students are in production for senior secondary and plans are developing for lower secondary and primary resources as well.

Have Sum Fun is continuing to grow, particularly in terms of HSF Online enrolments, and watch for the publication of resources on problem solving based on this. Our afternoon workshops are going to be up and running again – keep an eye out for details which will be coming soon; and we’re not forgetting MAWA Goes Country – if we have enough interest from our country members we will definitely get these workshops going again, too.

Following the resignation of Elena Stoyanova as the Convenor of our journal, Cross Section, almost a year ago, we are very keen to get it going again this year. Our student activities are well and truly underway, thanks to Jack Bana and his merry team of volunteers. In particular the Maths Games Camp is going to be in Albany this year – a wonderful venue and a great activity to take kids along to.

The preparations for the AAMT Conference here in July are progressing very well and it looks like being yet another fantastic Conference.

This is all combined with continuing our representation of our members in areas such as the development of the National Curriculum and discussions with the Curriculum Council and TISC to ensure that the proposed marks adjustment process adequately ranks students in Mathematics as we move to the new courses among other things.

We are always looking for volunteers to contribute to your Association as we can only do as much as our volunteers are willing to contribute. Did you know that the Association's only employees are our wonderful office staff? Everything else is done by teachers volunteering their free time to help provide support and activities for you and your students. Interested in lending a hand? Get in touch and let us know what you’re interested in helping out with – all our Committee members have areas in which you could make a signifi cant contribution to your Association.

I hope you all have a terrific start to the year.

Michelle
