Media Response From Noemi Reynolds

Hi Bethany,

Here are my responses to your questions.

1. You've already answered my first question (on the minister's response)

The minister has not yet contacted MAWA about the letter requesting a 12 month delay in the implementation of the Mathematics Courses of Study.

2. The second was whether you knew what was happening with the accreditation process. My understanding is that the maths courses will not go before the Curriculum Council tomorrow and that they have been held back for a special meeting in two weeks time, to give the writers more time to incorporate teacher feedback. Have I got that right?

MAWA does not have that information at this stage.

3. The third is could you please confirm that the reason MAWA called for the 12 months delay was because more than 100 heads of departments made that request of you.

MAWA called for the 12 months delay before the Heads of Departments forum on Wednesday 29 November. The more than 100 heads of departments affirmed this request. Generally, those attending the forum indicated they felt that more time is required to fully prepare all materials, that they are uneasy about the haste with which the new courses are being developed and accredited and that another year is required to inspire the necessary confidence in the courses.

4. And has the maths reference group (of which you are a member) been asked to meet again next Monday? If so, what do you expect you will cover.

I believe the reference group will be looking at the courses after the feedback from teachers has been incorporated as well as examining the exam and assessment design.
