President's Message

Michelle Ostberg

Welcome to the MAWA website. The Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) is a non-profit organisation which works to support teachers and students of mathematics in Western Australia. The Association is run by a committee of 10 volunteers as well as our wonderful employed office staff.

To support teachers we run professional development on a large scale (Conference, Primary Convention and Secondary Convention), on a small scale such as the afternoon workshops that meet after school and through electronic discussion via the MAWA List Serv (see our home page for details on how to join).

MAWA supports students and schools by running a wide range of student activities such as Have Sum Fun team problem solving competitions (both online and in person), MAD (Maths Activity Day), Maths Games Camps, Mathematics Talent Quest and more.

As well as running many student activities, MAWA assists parents who are looking for ways to help their children. These activities, along with the professional development we offer are outlined on the website. In addition to these services MAWA produces a range of quality publications all designed to support mathematics teaching and learning throughout the state.

The MAWA committee is a dedicated group of teachers from all sections of the Education community who come together once a month to further the aim of improving mathematics education throughout the state. In between the monthly meetings small groups within the committee work on preparing the student and teacher activities as well as publications. If you would like to join the MAWA committee, or perhaps work behind the scenes on one of the many tasks MAWA members undertake, please take the time to contact the office staff. The committee would certainly appreciate your help.
