2010 Newsletter No. 1
Welcome back to the start of another year. I hope you have all had an enjoyable and restful holiday and feel ready to face the challenges ahead.
As I reflect on 2009 for MAWA, it has definitely been a year of progress in a number of areas.
We have been involved in collecting your feedback and informing the development of the Australian curriculum.
We have published a new range of text books for the new senior school Mathematics course and have plans for a number of other new resources for primary and secondary that should support teachers implementing the Australian curriculum.
Our afternoon workshops are back in action again after a lengthy hiatus and we are planning to get MAWA Goes Country going again. (Want us to come to you? Let us know.) We hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Education in Peru who were very impressed with our work and have invited some of our committee members to support their work to raise mathematical education standards in their country.
Our student activities are still going strong and continuing to grow, including our hosting of the 2009 National Mathematics Talent Quest Awards Night.
We hosted the 2009 AAMT Biennial Conference in Fremantle which was an outstanding success.
Primary and Secondary Conventions were again fantastic professional learning opportunities and demand for them keeps growing. (Don’t worry – State Conference is back this year for those of you who have missed it). We completely restructured our office staff’s roles and are very fortunate to have such a strong team of capable people making sure that MAWA keeps operating to the high standards you have come to expect of us.
Probably the biggest step forward for MAWA for 2009, however, was our decision to appoint a part time Professional Officer.
I would like to thank Richard Korbosky for assuming the role for the last three months of 2009 while we organised and ran a selection process. He certainly got the position off to a great start and has definitely made in roads into increasing our professional learning provision for our primary members.
For the position, we received a range of absolutely outstanding applications and were very fortunate to secure the services of Mark O’Brien as our Professional Officer for 2010. Keep an eye out for him at our events – I’m sure he’ll be around and happy to discuss all things MAWA related, and even a few things non-MAWA related. If you wish to contact Mark, he works on Tuesdays and Thursdays and you’ll find out more about his work as the year progresses.
Despite all of our progress in 2009, stay tuned – there’s a lot more to come from MAWA in 2010, so don’t forget to renew your membership! Have a wonderful first term!
Michelle
