2009 Newsletter No. 3
Welcome back to school for Semester 2. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break and are feeling somewhat refreshed ready for the coming weeks.
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the AAMT Conference hosted by MAWA in Fremantle over the holidays. It was a fantastic Conference with an exciting array of presenters and I have heard many positive comments from people who found it to be "inspiring", "motivating" and “enjoyable” among other superlatives.
AAMT were, of course, the ones who made the Conference happen, but I would like to very quickly take the opportunity to thank a few people on the ground here in WA who helped to make it a truly memorable event. Thank you to Principal Mitch Mackay for providing John Curtin College of the Arts as the venue, and especially to Theatre Manager David Goldstraw and IT Coordinator Jacqui Butler who together did an amazing job and ensured that everything ran smoothly for the four days. Also, MAWA members Robin van Dongen, Jason Callaway, Debbie Lee, Mike Trafalski, Jennifer Key, Tony Robb, Jo Mincham and Xuan-Huong Phan who volunteered their time as local helpers during the Conference (apologies for the embarrassingly large badges). I also thank Barry Bastow and Sheila Byfi eld who came and helped out at the MAWA stand supporting Louisa and did a brilliant job. The Local Organising Committee (in particular Donna Buckley, Melissa Kuhlmann, Chris Fraser, and Di Tomazos) and other members of the MAWA Committee (Richard Korbosky and Jack Bana) must also be recognised for their hard work in the lead up to and during the Conference. The person who made sure it all came together smoothly from our end, though, was Louisa Kennard who always goes above and beyond for our Association and to whom we owe an unbelievably high debt of gratitude for her efforts, time and commitment over the Conference week and the many weeks leading up to it.
While the AAMT Conference was a wonderful learning experience for all who attended, I hope our secondary members have still got Secondary Convention pencilled in to your calendars for November 30 and December 1. You’ll find a flyer in this mailout with the initial details.
We welcome new Secondary PD Convenor Brad Krokosz and look forward to another fantastic Secondary Convention in 2009. Can’t wait until Secondary Convention? Well our PD workshops happening in North and South of the river venues may be just for you.
Term 3 is jammed packed with Student Activities! The Maths Talent Quest entries are filling the office with colour and are truly remarkable. Judging is underway with the awards night on Friday 7 August.
Greatly anticipated is the Games Camp in Albany on August 14 - 16 which promises to be a fantastic event this year with over 20 teams registered.
Term 3 is MAD! Maths Activity Day on Saturday 5 September is a magnificent hands on day for our Primary students. Don’t forget to get your students registered!
Have Sum Fun Online is currently running for Years 5, 6 and 7 - it’s definitely all happening at MAWA!
I hope you all have a terrific Term 3 and are able to find the time to avail yourself of some of the opportunities that MAWA has available for you and your students. Thank you for your ongoing support of your Association.
