Happy birthday MAWA
It is always great to celebrate special birthdays and this 50th birthday for MAWA is such a special occasion.
The formal celebrations for members and committee, past and present, was held last evening at UWA with about 80 people attending.
At this simple but wonderful occasion, those present heard from originals, John Greenway and Wally Green, whilst another original, Norm Hoffman was also present.
Later past Presidents, Barry Kissane, Barry Bastow and Jack Bana also spoke of the growth and achievements of the Association.
Their stories and reflections on the personalities and the events that shaped the MAWA into what it is today were timely reminders of the effectiveness of this Association in developing Mathematics Education in this state. Further, the importance of the members being teachers who support each other through the MAWA activities was highlighted by each rendition of times past.
Presently, of course, MAWA is strong with vibrant activities for teachers such as the annual Conference, the Primary and Secondary Conventions, PD opportunities and numerous publications. These are complimented with the many student activities, such as MAD day next weekend, such as Have Sum Fun online over the past month and into next term, and the Talent Quests. As well student texts are a vital component of many Mathematics classrooms across the state and will continue to be so into the future.
Also in recent years MAWA has had to become an advocate for mathematics education and promote clear evidence based debate on issues impacting on student learning of mathematics. This last point being evident in this last week, here in WA, with media attention to issues related to calculators.
The website and it various connections and of course, MAWA as a member of the AAMT, all provide a truly national and global connection to all who are involved or interested in mathematics education.
Finally, in 2009, MAWA will host their third AAMT Conference for this state, though it is the first for Fremantle. This last point is an important distinction for those of us living in this part of the world.
So, all in all, clearly, MAWA is demonstrating that at 50 years of age it is not a middle aged Association but still young in outlook, but mature in composure.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
